Only 20% of East Azerbaijan’s Mineral Reserves Are Being Extracted

The Governor concluded by emphasizing that only 20% of East Azerbaijan’s 8,500 billion tons of mineral reserves are currently being extracted.

Abedin Khoram, on the sidelines of the East Azerbaijan Friday Imams’ conference, told reporters that there are more than 1,500 small and large unfinished projects in the province. He noted that completing these projects would help resolve part of the province’s problems. He emphasized that the government’s policy is not to start any new project unless the unfinished projects are completed.

He added that the government has launched the National Housing Movement as an economic driver and a stimulus for related industries, and this plan is being implemented in each county according to the local housing situation.

The Governor of East Azerbaijan also stressed the need to strengthen the province’s regional connections, stating that necessary negotiations have been conducted, and according to the government’s mandate, efforts are underway to increase economic exchanges with neighboring countries.

Referring to the province’s rich mineral reserves, he said that only 20% of the total 8,500 billion tons of mineral resources in the province are currently being extracted. This sector should be activated as one of the province’s key development capacities, with expert planning and environmental considerations in mind.

The governor also emphasized the optimal use of science and technology parks, noting the importance of enhancing the connection between universities and the industrial and mining sectors. He stressed the need for precise planning to turn East Azerbaijan into a hub for technology and innovation exports.

He further added that one of the major obstacles to production in the province is the shortage of water, electricity, and gas infrastructure, which the government is addressing as a priority.

Finally, Khoram referred to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, lamenting that the distribution of healthcare personnel is unbalanced, with some areas of the province facing a shortage of medical staff, requiring urgent action.
