Polysilicon price increase in China; market reaction to government interventions

According to a new report by PV Magazine on July 11, 2025, which was also monitored by Fitco’s Renewable Energy Department, China’s monocrystalline polysilicon prices have risen for the first time after a period of decline. The China Mono Premium Index rose 0.74% to 34,225 yuan ($4.77) per kilogram in the week to July 8.

PV Magazine reported that the price increase was in response to intervention by government agencies such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Central Economic and Financial Commission, which have stressed in meetings with major solar companies to prohibit underselling and combat destructive price competition.

Despite the price increase, trading volumes are still low, with many contracts being concluded on a trial scale or in limited volumes. It is not yet clear whether this is the result of a structural change in the market or simply due to government regulatory pressure; An issue that will affect the future price stability.

Analysts have warned that if control policies continue without fundamental reforms, it may lead to production stimulation, inventory accumulation and further downward pressure on prices. Also, data from the Guangzhou Futures Exchange shows that futures prices for the period July 2025 to June 2026 are fluctuating between 34 and 38 yuan; but even these price ceilings do not guarantee favorable profitability for producers.

This event is considered the first sign of a potential return to equilibrium in the Chinese polysilicon market, although the situation is still considered fragile and its stabilization will require reducing excess capacity and increasing demand.
